As important as advertising is, as far as what avenues to use, ad writing is probably even more important. The reason is simple.
No matter what form of advertising you use, if the ad you write is crap, you’re not going to get the results that you’re looking for, if any at all.
In this post, I’m going to concentrate on email marketing and your subject.
The subject is where most people get tripped up right from the start.
The reason is because if you’re subject isn’t compelling, people aren’t going to open your email. If they don’t open your email, it doesn’t matter how good the actual ad is. Nobody is going to see it.
So what’s a good subject for email promotion? Well, the better way to go about this is to explain what a bad subject is. A bad subject is one that is full of hype and totally unbelievable. I can’t tell you how many subjects I see that are something like this….
Nobody worth their salt is going to believe a subject like that. And the ones who do are looking for a free way to do it and won’t turn into paying customers anyway.
So stay away from subjects like this.
Here’s an example.
“Discover the ONE traffic secret that will increase your traffic by500%”
Now whether or not the person reading this is the least bit skeptical, they’re going to want to know what that one traffic secret is.
Curiosity IS going to get the better of them.
These are the kind of subjects you want to use.
Notice I use the word “discover” and NOT “learn”. The reason you don’t EVER want to use the word “learn” is because learning involves work.
Discovering is like the information just falls into the person’s lap and gets automatically soaked up.
A subject that forces your prospect to open your email is critical. So when constructing one, ask yourself if you were to see the same kind of subject if YOU would open that email.
See you next time with more ad writing tips!

Hi Richard, these are great tips. It’s so refreshing to see people advocating against the “hype” marketing of “Get Rich Quick”, get paid for doing nothing.
Cheers,
Charly
It doesn’t matter if it is your emails, blog entries or articles that you write, if you don’t have a great headline that puts a hook into your reader, your writing will quickly find it’s way to the recycle bin. We all suffer from information overload and if a headline doesn’t catch my eye, it is very unlikely that I will read it.
Hey Rich.
Good post! I really agree with you that your subject of the email is of paramount importance. And on the same wavelength and if you advertise with traffic exchanges, a catchy “splash page” is a must.

@ Daniel, Great point – it’s so important to just get the prospects attention and stand out from the crowds – particularly with traffic exchanges too.
Here’s a free report I put together on traffic exchanges if anyone wants to download it:

Hi Richard,
Great post! Short and simple but very essential principle in email marketing. Might I add that the title (and content itself) of an email should also be spam-filter friendly to avoid being filtered out.
Have a great day!
Clarence
Thanks to let me know this tips.
be blessed.
Discover! Great, I like that much better than “Learn”. I think that would be a valuable method in many ways.
Thanks Richard!
By the large satisfaction has read your article, I proceed to execution –
is obliged to change most my headings and subjects.
Great tips Richard I will remember them when writing ads.
GREAT advice, Richard: I’m guilty myself when I find my inbox full of scanning names and titles of emails and deleting without opening. A compelling title is EVERYTHING.
Thanks for the great advice….
Melissa
