If you’re looking for free traffic, there is no better source than search engine traffic. I’m a huge fan of getting all the free traffic I can from search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN.
Even though it involves consistent work (and often patience as well) it can be a much less risky way to generate super targeted visitors to your webpages.
With this post I wanted to show you a really quick (and easy!) way to get MORE traffic from Google.
(If you don’t know anything about SEO, then you should read this post on how to start getting search engine traffic first.)
The Easy Way To Increase
Search Engine Traffic
I’m not going to lie to you. Search Engine Optimization DOES require work … BUT … There are ways to cut down your work load and focus on things that you KNOW will get you results.
By examining your current SEO ‘assets’, you can quickly and easily find the right keywords to target, and exactly where to target them.
I’m going to show you one of my favorite ways of getting more search engine traffic, with minimal amount of effort.
Step #1 - See Where The
Traffic Is Coming From
If you’re serious about SEO you simply MUST be tracking where your traffic is coming from, and how it is getting to your site.
One of the best free tools that I use is Google’s Analytics (www.Google.Com/analytics). You simply paste a piece of code into your site and it gives you a wealth of information on your site’s performance.
The “Traffic Sources Overview” shows you in graphical format where your traffic is coming from. For example, in the screenshot below, you can see that my site is getting almost a third of the traffic from the search engines. To see exactly what keywords are generating this traffic, simply hit the “View Report” link at the bottom.

Step #2 - What Keywords
Are Bringing You Traffic?
By looking at the keyword report below I can see that most of the visits are coming from people searching for my name, but the second highest performing keyword is the phrase “how to create a squeeze page”.
This is one of the many training posts (just like this one) that I post to my blog on a regular basis.

Now that I know what keywords are bringing me traffic, I want to see if I can improve the performance.
Step #3 - Find Out
Where You Rank
The next step simply involves going to Google and typing in that exact search phrase and see where my site is ranking.
From the screenshot below, it’s telling me that my blog post is #4 out of over 7 million for that keyword phrase.

I know that being in position #4 is bringing me traffic, so it’s a pretty safe assumption that moving up in the search engines will bring me even more traffic.
Step #4 - Build Backlinks
This simple procedure took me less than 5 minutes but now I know a lot of useful information …
- I know what KEYWORDS are bringing me traffic.
- I know what PAGES that traffic is going to.
- I know what RANKING those pages have for those keywords
All that needs to be done now to increase rankings and get more traffic is build backlinks to those pages, with that keyword as the anchor text.
The benefit of this system is that it removes ALL the guesswork. By the end of it you know exactly what to do, where to do it, and WHY you’re doing it. And you’re not wasting time on something that’s not going to work.
After you’ve worked with one keyword, go to the next highest performing keyword and repeat the process. Pretty soon you’ll see all of your high performing pages moving rapidly up the search engines.
Be sure to leave a comment in the box below to let me know what you think about this post. I’d also love to hear some of your results once you start using these tips!

Great post and nice tips … I will have to use your ideas in my next video production.
Cheers,

You mentioned getting backlinks. What is the most effective way of doing that?
There are literally hundreds of different ways of getting baclinks, but for a good introduction you may want to check out this transcript of a recent interview I did with Willie Crawford, who’s another marketing and SEO expert:

Hope this helps!

Howdy Richard,
Another great helpful tip that I thank you for.
Thanks Richard for the great advice. If newbies are going to learn anything at all, people like you have toshare your abilities to them. So thanks again.
You explain it very well. We all want to get more search engine traffic and your explanation makes it all seem simple which it is.
More links = more visitors
Hey Richard, Thanks for the Great tips! I know everyone could use this to their advantage. Nice of you to bless us with your knowledge once again. I finally got my site up and I am following your traffic secrets best I can. My
first article just happens to be on links! and
my article; effective use of squeeze pages is at #1 on Yahoo and Google. All because of your
help and guidance. Thanks, Tim
Mr. Legg,
Thank you for your excellent tips. Looks as though I am going to do something again with my website. My problem (being a Beginner, for about 4 years) Is< I built my website to be the main Domain, and I am creating various sub-domains running off it.
The sub-domains are the ones that will be “Focused”, but the problem will be with the Main Domain, to know which and how to use “Good Keywords”.
Thank you again for your article.
Regards Harry Deitch. (Sydney, Australia).
Hey Richard,
Timely post, I just started doing this exact thing a couple months ago. For some reason I put off using Google analytics much too long.
The guy above was asking about getting back links…well, this is a good way to do it assuming the blog owner allows keywords instead of a name (see keyword phrase above)
Cheers
Thanks for the info Richard,I will use it in hopes of driving traffic to my Ad Board.
thank you richard, your traffic tips are the best that I recieve, always helpful for me, thanks again.
Dear Richard

Great advice. I’m already creating backlinks by syndicating articles, but I’m going to try your backlink tip exactly as you explain here for my newest website.
As usual this is a very useful tip on how to increase search engine traffic. Also wanted to say thanks for the video on getting back links. Off topic, my website is all about natural health remedies if anyone is interested.
Thanks Richard. Very useful info. I hope to be able to use it soon.
John
Hi rechard i just got to know this now guest it is really informative and useful thanks.
Thank you Richard. You always offer genuine and genuninely helpful information. So many marketers sinply bombard their list with JV mailings everyday, with no real advice or respect for the people on that list. You do the opposite to that, and I think far more people on your list respect you than most of the really big names out there.
One thing i would be interested to really get better at is quality complelling copywriting; for sales pages, ads, articles, etc.
Cheers,
Daryl
Great advice Richard. I for one started off using good keywords, I got some traffic to my site but still was buried in google. Then I concentrated on targeted keywords, keeping them relevant, and started seeing better results.
Great advice, I look forward to watching your videos they add real value. Am following your advice regards keyword research.
Many thanks.
Keren
We always need to be reminded of the simple ABC of this business. Thanks Richard for a well needed post.
Richard:
The way you say it sounds easy… but, no, SEO is not so easy. It’s great to appear in the first page of Google search. Not many can brag about and you can. Congratulations.
Jesus M.
Hey Jesus,
For me, SEO is a process - it’s about doing a lot of little things the right way (or at least a little bit better than your competition).
A lot of people think it’s hard because they are confused by SEO and don’t really know what to do.
I’m not saying that getting to #1 is the easiest thing in the world to do, because it’s not. But what I try and do is break down SEO into “easily digestible chunks” that people can use.
There’s still work involved, but when you understand more of what work needs to be done, it’s possible to make the process easier.
Richard
Hi Richard,
Thanks for your continuious help and useful tips.
Sally
Yet another great tip Richard. Certainly well worth waiting for.
Your internet skills haven’t stiffened up even if your legs have.
Take care
Jean
Thanks Richard for the great material and especially how you presented it using graphics to illustrate your point.
Creating backlinks is very effective, but patience is required.
You make understanding this information very easy for people of all skill levels.
Mike
I was moving up the search engines from 175 to 65 in about 3 days but in the last 3 days I’ve dropped back to #70 so your tips will help. Thanks!!
An eye-opener. Thank you.
What is the best way to move up in MSN Live search rankings?
I find that MSN and Yahoo rely a lot more on the “on page” factors than Google (where incoming links seem to be one of the most important factors)
So to rank higher in MSN (and Yahoo), make sure you have pages that are as well optimized as possible and get keyword rich anchor text links pointing to those pages.
Richard
I’ve listened to your Willie Crawford interview. In it you said although it’s not relevant to position ratings it does help to get the click if you put a sales message in the meta tag. You don’t appear to have done that in this example. Sorry to nit pick because once again you have given out some great advice. Thanks
Tom
Hi Richard,
Great information. I really appreciate the hard work you put forth to gives us all this free stuff. I read and listen to everything you send me.
To Your Success,

Richard have sent an urgent email pre buying traffic product.
Have since received email sating you are in ststes - do you have support address I can contact to have question answered
Thanks
HB,
Email deliverability is fragile at the best of times so I use a helpdesk system. (Incidentally, I can’t see any email from your address.)
Use the “contact” link in the sidebar. From there you’ll be able to submit a ticket at the helpdesk which will be seen.
Richard
Once agin great stuff Richard.
Thanks for the simple but doable stuff.
Will
Hi Richard
This a simple and interesting method I may adopt, although I do get limited information from Cpanel awstat.
What I would like to know is: The exact position to place analytic codes on the HTML source page.
Your reply would be appreciated.
Dola
Hi Dola,
I usually place the Google Analytics code right at the bottom of the page … typically just above the tag in the HTML code.
If using something like Wordpress, I’d put the code in the ‘footer’ file (usually ‘footer.php’ depending on your theme)
Richard
Richard thanks for a great article, hey since you’re using Google analytics to track your numbers (conversion rates, etc) do you know about canonical URL’s, this new tagging system addresses duplicate content issues on your site and prevents tagged URL’s from being indexed.
John
Hi Richard,
I like your post and what you have to say. I installed Google Analytics on two websites. And even though I did it exactly the same way it worked only on one of them. I’m not sure what was the problem (my guess is the theme) but I spent days repasting the code in different places. The funny part is that Google was detecting the code, I saw the correct check mark in my account but wasn’t getting any information. After 2 weeks of this I found through Google Help a very easy and free way to check if your GA code is actually installed correctly. It could have saved me a lot of frustration and time if I had this to start with: It is called Epik One Site Scan and you can find it at http://www.sitescanga.com It is a free service asking for nothing, no opt in etc. In the spirit of sharing I want to do my part and this was an awesome help to me.
Hi Richard,
Thanks for the calming colours, I find them very reassuring.
Out of all the emails I receive (feels like thousands) to buy something, I can honestly say I trust only three people and you are one of them!
Thanks for making me feel secure enough to open up and accept your tips.
You are the Go To Guy in Affilate Marketing for me.
Take care,
Jackie M
P.S. I feel like I know you, still confused as ever but making progress! Thanks again.
Hey Richard,
Great advice, I’m going to try it with my new site.
My spice cat site got ranked 3rd on google.com and 1st on goggle.ca with the keyword “spice cats”. That was pure luck not because I know SEO. LOL I haven’t worked on it for awhile so it’s sliding a tad, but I’m still on the first page.
Thanks for all your help, the video’s are amazing.
Kary
You suggest backlinks.. but you make no comment about the majority of blogs that use “nofollow”. Placing your backlink on those sites will offer up no google juice. Shouldn’t that be brought to attention?
Reply from Richard: I try not to get too hung up on whether links are dofollow or nofollow.
Yes, dofollow count more for ranking in Google, but a link is a link, and I have a LOT of keywords that rank well on Yahoo and MSN because it’s not a factor for them.
I always advocate trying to make your link building look as natural as possible too - so mixing dofollow and nofollow is going to look more natural than just dofollow links anyway.
I know some people will disagree with me, and that’s ok
But I teach people based on what works for me, and I’ve never had a problem as a result of getting nofollow links.
Hi Richard,
Thanks for your all important traffic pulling tips. I used to consider myself a NEWBIE, but I think your numerous tips are helping me upgrade myself from that position and I do believe I’ll get there eventually.
Since you teach people only on what works for you, I’m optimistic that your tips will work for me too. Please keep up the good work and keep those valuable tips flowing. Nice one Richard!!!
Hi Richard
Great stuff! I will using the info to try and get more traffic to my website. I need all the traffic I can get. Thanks again Richard.
It’s easy when you know how!
Thanks for the tips Richard. I will definitely use them to drive traffic to my site.
Brilliant!
Instead of casting about trying to beat out millions of people for hard to rank keywords, simply focus on what is ALREADY ranking on google, and strengthen it!
Love that
I keep looking at google analytics each day, just to see the traffic
I guess I could be doing something useful with the info! LOL
Thanks again!

As usual Richard gives us a simply explained but intensely valuable tutorial on how to improve our IM.
Good information. We sometimes forget about
the little things that really count.
Great tips! Will use these as future projects as well.
Hi Richard,
Just wanted to say thanks for another useful post. I recently started following your info and I can echo the comments of others - I find you to be one of the few genuinely helpful internet marketers I have come across.
Your methodical approach maybe suits my mindset as an engineer - I am now taking action at last, following your step by step instructions. My website is up, traffic strategies are underway; next stop Google Analytics!
Thanks,
Michael
Good stuff Richard.
Along with Analytics I also use Google Webmaster Tools which gives you a great deal more information about your sites.
A little more complicated but well worth the effort.
Ken.
