They’re realizing that good old Yellow Page advertising just doesn’t cut it any more.

They KNOW they need to be online… but they don’t know HOW to get online.

Taking offline businesses and giving them an online presence isn’t really all that difficult - all you need to start with is a basic website and some basic on page SEO, a few backlinks and they will start getting traffic from Google.

Offline businesses are used to spending money advertising in places like Yellow Pages, newspapers etc, so if you can show them a way that they can tap into the power of free traffic from Google, you’ll find many of them scrambling to write you a big fat check on the spot!

Infact, several years ago when I was in my marketing ‘infancy’ I created a simple website for my Brother-in-laws business.

He’s in a competitive market, where each new client is worth thousands of dollars to him … annually.

The website was little more than a 4-5 page site with some basic information about the company, a few testimonials from satisfied customers, and a phone number to call for more information.

If I’m brutally honest, the design looked amateurish (but hey … I was an amateur back then! ) and I knew very little about SEO.

After creating the site, I submitted a few articles with backlinks to the site.

Soon after, the site was on the front page of Google for their main keywords.

Fast forward to today, and the site is #1 on Google for multiple keywords and is one of their main source of new customers.

(My brother-in-law has even had his competitors literally begging for my contact information because they wanted to pay ME to build a site for them!)

The great thing about working with local businesses is that the keywords people use to find them are very specific, typically several words long, and so are VERY easy to get good rankings for.

Here is what I would do to create a new site for a local business…

1) Register a domain name that is the EXACT keyword they want to rank for this is typically something like www.[occupation][location].com … e.g. www.FederalWayDentalClinic.com/org/net

(TIP: If the .com one is gone, try .org, or even .net - so long as people are finding them through Google, it doesn’t matter what the extension is as they just have to click it, not remember it)

2) Create a simple 3-5 page site using basic on page SEO … e.g. Put keywords in the title tags, <H1>, <H2> tags, in the body of the content, in the filename of images etc.

3) Create a series of articles and submit them to different directories, linking back to the site with the keyword as anchor text. (see this post on affiliate marketing tips for more info)

4) Write a simple press release and submit to free press release sites, or spend $19 with WebWire.com to get a press release with 3 strong anchor text backlinks to the site.

Just that amount of work will usually get them on the front page of Google very quickly.  And to get them even higher, you just need to generate a few more backlinks.

It’s not uncommon to find companies spending more than $10,000 a year just in Yellow Pages advertising (and who uses Yellow Page books now that Google is here??), and even more on other advertising.

If you could offer to build them a site that will actually bring them new customers from free traffic, and at a fraction of the cost of their annual advertising bill … do you think they’d be interested?

You bet they would!!

You can easily charge a minimum of $1,000-$1,500 for this work (and you should realistically aim higher … especially once you have a ‘portfolio’ of sites you’ve created) AND you can also charge a monthly retainer fee for updating the site, writing more articles etc.

And it’s NOT difficult to build a professional looking site.

- You can get ready made professional templates from hosts like HostGator that are FREE for you to use (click here to see examples)

- You can create 3-5 pages of information for the site just by writing about the company, and putting keywords in all the right places for SEO.

- You can write and submit an article to the major directories in 1-2 hours maximum

- You can write and submit a press release in the same time.  (Use the $19 WebWire.com service and you are almost guaranteed to get the press release on page #1 of Google)

- Add their site/business to the Google Business Center (http://www.google.com/local/add/) and get them a free listing at the top of the search results like in the image below:

You can easily get all of this accomplished in a single day if you’re prepared to work at it.

Even if you didn’t want to do the work yourself, you could outsource this for a couple of hundred dollars and keep the rest for yourself as pure profit!

Just one new client a week at $1,500 gives you an income of $78,000 a year!

Not bad huh?

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned about local business owners, it’s that they TALK to other business owners.

Once you start getting results for different clients, I promise you that the referrals will come thick and fast.

(Here’s another really powerful tip … Offer to give clients a $100 discount if they’ll recommend you to 3 other business owners they know!)

So if you still believe in all the hypey ’systems’ and ‘programs’ that promise you a million dollars overnight … this may not be for you.

But if you aren’t afraid to put some effort into building a real business, consider becoming an offline consultant.  It can be a LOT more lucrative than regular affiliate marketing and a lot LESS work!

The truth though is that most business owners don’t know HOW to generate those new customers.

With the ever increasing dominance of the search engines compared to typical ‘phone books’, more and more businesses are starting to realize the power of having an internet presence for online lead generation.

If you have any kind of online business, whether you are a product owner, or even if your strategy is affiliate marketing, you should be trying to generate leads online.

A list of prospects and customers is an extremely valuable asset that you can leverage time and time again.

If you are sending traffic directly to a salespage then a huge amount of your marketing efforts are being wasted.

Even with an extremely optimistic conversion rate of 5% on a product … that still means 95 out of every 100 people who visit your site will leave and never come back.

A more effective strategy would be to send people to a squeeze page first, offering some kind of free gift … possibly a free report.

This way, you can capture the name and email of visitors to your site and be able to follow up with them via autoresponder as many times as you want.

You may experience a slight decrease in sales initially (as not everyone will optin and get to your salespage), but the people on your list will be highly tartgeted and you should find that your lifetime customer value increases dramatically.

By testing different elements of your squeeze page, sales page, follow up sequence etc, you should be able to build a very profitable marketing funnel.

As an internet marketer, you also have many skills that offline business owners do not possess … or even understand in many cases.

ALL businesses want new customers, and by showing local business owners how to bring their business online, you can demand very large fees.

The beauty of this kind of system is that, while many of the tasks may be extremely simple to someone with a little experience, to the offline business owner you look like an expert.

Here are just a few things you can offer to do to generate sales leads for businesses:

1) If they have a website, offer to ‘optimize’ it for them using relevant keywords and good on page SEO so that they can get more search engine traffic and leads.

2) If they don’t have a website, offer to build one for them (HINT: You can use Wordpress and one of the thousands of available themes for free)

3) If they have a website, but no list, offer to add an optin form to their site  so they can build a list, and then “manage” that list for them for a monthly fee (HINT: Use an Aweber or GetResponse account)

4) Offer to write and submit articles for them to build backlinks to their site and help get better rankings.

The truth is there are many ways to sell services to businesses.  They ALL want to generate new leads and new customers - and businesses expect to pay for advertising and promotion expenses so it can be very easy to find new clients.

A great way to get started is to offer to create a site for free for someone you know that has a business, in return for a testimonial, or recommendation.

This way you get to perfect your skills and start building a portfolio at the same time.

(BIG HINT:  If you feel you can’t do any of this, you can also outsource all of the work to people on places like Odesk.com who can do it inexpensively … You can still charge the business owner more and make money as a “project manager”)

Ok… so by now your heads should be overflowing with new ideas

All you have to do is take action!

Here are some tips to remember when trying to build your list of leads online…

1) Targeted Traffic = Targeted Leads - It’s no good sending golfers to an optin page for a needlework product!

2) Relationship is Key - People buy from those that they know, like and trust.  With so many distractions online, it’s up to YOU to stand out from the crowd.

3) Provide VALUE First - This helps with #2 above … If you can show people the value in just being on your list, they are going to be much more receptive whenever you have an offer to mail to them.

4) Constant Communication - Things move quick online, and you have to constantly be in your prospects email box.  If you wait 3 months between mailings, chances are they’ll forget who you are.

How To Start
Generating Leads Online

The first thing you need is a way to capture leads.  Online, the simplest lead capture system is an optin page (also called squeeze pages or lead capture page) that typically asks the visitor for their name and email address.

Depending on your market, other information can also be input, although the more information you ask for, the lower your optin conversion rates are likely to be.

(If you’ve got no idea about the “techie side” of things, simply visit this page which contains a video on how to create a squeeze page.)

You’ll also need a service such as Aweber.com or GetResponse.com to store and maintain your database of leads.

While it may be tempting when you’re starting out to use the ‘free’ options here, I would highly recommend that you do NOT.

Speaking from my own personal experience, the free services are free for a reason …they simply don’t work well.  And it’s even worse when one of these free sites goes out of business and shuts down their site… along with your entire list

Once you have the optin form in place, it’s simply a matter of driving traffic to that page. You can use whatever traffic sources you like for your internet lead generation e.g. article marketing, ppc, but whatever you do, make sure that it’s targeted traffic!  (Visit the following page for a video on how to start getting free search engine traffic!)

Unfortunately, I see far too many people desperately trying to make a few extra bucks online and failing miserably.

How many times have you seen a clickbank product with an affiliate tools page that just gives you a link and tells you to “use it” and you’ll make hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in commissions?

1) What market are you going to promote? Is it a market you know about and can write about?

2) What product are you going to promote? Does it have a professional appearance, a record of good conversions, and good reviews online?

3) Are you going to do a direct promotion? You should consider sending traffic first to one of your squeeze pages so you can build a list and follow up with your leads.

4) How are you going to drive traffic? Are you going to use pay per click (Google Adwords) or are you going to focus on getting free traffic to your website?

Affiliate Marketing Success…

It may not sound very ’sexy’ or fun, but developing a good affiliate marketing strategy is not only going to give you a better chance of actually making money, it’s also going to make it easier for you to work.

Once you have a set of instructions or blueprints to follow, you no longer waste time sitting at your computer, wondering what to do.

Remember, if you want this to be a successful business you have to treat it like a business - and that may mean coming up with your own business plan.

If you find difficulty doing this, imagine that you were going into see your bank manager to ask for a loan.

This is a great excercise because it FORCES you to think in terms of having a real business.  After all, would you go into a bank, looking for a business loan to just “sell stuff”?

Affiliate marketing *is* a great way to make money online.  Even as a product owner myself, I put a lot of focus on promoting other products as an affiliate, but you need to know how, what, where and why you’re promoting a particular product.

So what are the elements you need to consider to create the best squeeze page template possible?

Short Squeeze Page Templates…
“Optin or Leave!”

Some people prefer to use a short squeeze page that has a few bullet points (or a video) and then an optin box to the side.  The types of squeeze page templates have all of their content “above the fold” so that the user does not have to scroll down to optin.

The benefit of this template is that the desired action for the user is clear - they can either optin or leave.

A potential downside to this is that you may not have enough space to adequately “sell” the optin by explaining how the user will benefit by opting in.

Longer Templates …
“Sell Them on Your Freebie”

The opposite to the short template is a longer one with more sales copy explaining to the user just what they can expect after opting in.

• Make the squeeze page 2-3 pages long (or even longer) typically.

• Place the optin form at the bottom of the ’salespage’.

An advantage of this is that you can get higher conversion rates because as people read through your copy, they can become more excited by what you are offering, and be more compelled to give you their name and information i.e. you will get much more optins from people who take the time to read your page.
A dis-advantage to this design is that your sales copy needs to be good enough to keep people wanting to read and scrolling all the way to the bottom. If they get bored and never make it to the bottom, they wont see your optin box and wont sign up.

Consider using a mixture of the two …

• Use a short video and optin form at the very top of the page for people who want to sign up immediately.

• Below this, have some longer copy that explains the benefits in a little more detail, along with another optin form at the very bottom.

This optin page template gives the user two opportunities to sign up, and helps maximize your conversion rates.

The Only Way To Guarantee
High Conversions …

The only real way to know which one is going to perform better is to test each one against the others. Only when you have real results will you know which is going to be best for your market and audience.

Other elements you can test include:

The good news is that once you know how to make a squeeze page, it becomes almost second nature to do it again and again everytime you need to.

If you’re to have any chance of getting people to optin, you need a squeeze page design that motivates people to want to learn more.

Some of the best lead capture page templates are simple forms that offer the reader only one choice - “optin or leave!”

Simplicity is also key to getting good conversion rates.

*AVOID* things like:

• Multiple navigation links on the page - this just confuses your prospect.
• Multiple calls to action e.g. trying to get them to do more than one thing. The one goal should be to optin.
• Making your message difficult to see e.g. by using harsh colours, or fonts that are too large or small.

Take a look at other people’s squeeze page designs and see what attracts you to THEIR pages. What are the elements that catch YOUR attention?

Consider using a similar design for your own optin page.

Elements That Increase
Your Conversions.

Often when creating an optin page, people will include elements that they think look pretty, or cute, or clever but they don’t test whether or not it affects conversion.

Your primary goal with your squeeze page is to get people to optin, and you should only include elements on your free squeeze page that help you do that e.g. fancy graphics may look nice, but they may take people’s attention away from your message.

Things that can help conversions include:

• Strong headline - Something that grabs the readers attention.
• Video/audio - Video especially can be a powerful communication tool, and people are often more willing to watch a short video rather than read a bunch of text.
• Arrows or graphics highlighting the optin box - These help make the call to action clear and draw the readers eye so they know exactly what they should do.

If you’re looking for instructions on the step-by-step “how to”, check out this video on how to create a squeeze page

Remember, once you’ve created one squeeze page, you can use the same basic template over and over again to make as many as you like.

In order to get people to optin to your lead capture page, you first need to stop and get their attention long enough for them to read your marketing message.

The headline is likely going to be the first thing they see.

• Your squeeze page headline should be big and bold so that it stands out.

• It should be benefit driven. Focus on the main benefit that your product/service/report will give to the end user.

• Decide on your visitor’s biggest problem and how it can be solved, and make these part of the headline.

A good headline will grab their attention and get them reading the rest of your page.

List Benefits That Get Them
Begging To Know More…

Your squeeze page should ideally be getting someone to optin in exchange for more information, or a free report.

Giving away something for free will help increase conversions, but you can also increase them more by building extreme value in the prospects mind.

List out the main benefits that the user will get from opting in.

• Make it an irresistible offer so that they would be insane to pass up getting the report that you are giving away.

• Focus on the wants, needs and desires of your prospect. Always let them know what’s in it for them.

Use a Strong “Call to Action”
That Gets Them Scrambling
to Optin…

People often need to be told what to do. This is particularly true on the internet where people are distracted easily and bounce around from site to site, often without any real purpose.

If you want someone to enter their name and email address TELL them to enter it.

• Repeat the call to action if you need to, but make sure that somewhere on the page you show people what you want them to do.

• Include arrows or other graphical elements to show people where they need to enter the information.

• Make the call to action clear. (Again, your squeeze page should only have ONE main call to action i.e. getting the optin)

• Use a short video on your page, end the video by telling them to optin, include an arrow that shows them where the optin is.

• Make the end of the video be a live “demo” of how to fill out the form - just record your screen as you do it so there is NO confusion on what needs to be done.

Even though it involves consistent work (and often patience as well) it can be a much less risky way to generate super targeted visitors to your webpages.

With this post I wanted to show you a really quick (and easy!) way to get MORE traffic from Google.

(If you don’t know anything about SEO, then you should read this post on how to start getting search engine traffic first.)

The Easy Way To Increase
Search Engine Traffic

I’m not going to lie to you.  Search Engine Optimization DOES require work … BUT … There are ways to cut down your work load and focus on things that you KNOW will get you results.

By examining your current SEO ‘assets’, you can quickly and easily find the right keywords to target, and exactly where to target them.

I’m going to show you one of my favorite ways of getting more search engine traffic, with minimal amount of effort.

Step #1 - See Where The
Traffic Is Coming From

If you’re serious about SEO you simply MUST be tracking where your traffic is coming from, and how it is getting to your site.

One of the best free tools that I use is Google’s Analytics (www.Google.Com/analytics).  You simply paste a piece of code into your site and it gives you a wealth of information on your site’s performance.

The “Traffic Sources Overview” shows you in graphical format where your traffic is coming from.  For example, in the screenshot below, you can see that my site is getting almost a third of the traffic from the search engines.  To see exactly what keywords are generating this traffic, simply hit the “View Report” link at the bottom.

Step #2 - What Keywords
Are Bringing You Traffic?

By looking at the keyword report below I can see that most of the visits are coming from people searching for my name, but the second highest performing keyword is the phrase “how to create a squeeze page”.

This is one of the many training posts (just like this one) that I post to my blog on a regular basis.

Now that I know what keywords are bringing me traffic, I want to see if I can improve the performance.

Step #3 - Find Out
Where You Rank

The next step simply involves going to Google and typing in that exact search phrase and see where my site is ranking.

From the screenshot below, it’s telling me that my blog post is #4 out of over 7 million for that keyword phrase.

I know that being in position #4 is bringing me traffic, so it’s a pretty safe assumption that moving up in the search engines will bring me even more traffic.

Step #4 - Build Backlinks

This simple procedure took me less than 5 minutes but now I know a lot of useful information …

• I know what KEYWORDS are bringing me traffic.

• I know what PAGES that traffic is going to.

• I know what RANKING those pages have for those keywords

All that needs to be done now to increase rankings and get more traffic is build backlinks to those pages, with that keyword as the anchor text.

The benefit of this system is that it removes ALL the guesswork.  By the end of it you know exactly what to do, where to do it, and WHY you’re doing it.  And you’re not wasting time on something that’s not going to work.

After you’ve worked with one keyword, go to the next highest performing keyword and repeat the process.  Pretty soon you’ll see all of your high performing pages moving rapidly up the search engines.

I personally don’t like paying for traffic all that much, so I prefer to get it for free when possible and over the years have got pretty good at learning how to get good search engine rankings.
